Great coffee at home isn’t about expensive machines. It’s about a handful of unglamorous fundamentals that nobody finds exciting and everybody skips.

Fresh beans, whole

Coffee goes stale fast once ground. Buy whole beans, buy less at a time, and grind right before you brew. This one change outweighs every gadget you could buy.

Weigh it

A cheap kitchen scale turns coffee from guesswork into a recipe you can repeat. Roughly one part coffee to sixteen parts water is a forgiving place to start.

Consistency beats perfection. A good cup you can make every day wins.

The one upgrade

If you buy anything, buy a burr grinder. Uniform grounds are the difference between muddy and clear, bitter and sweet. Everything else is preference.

Water just off the boil, a slow pour, thirty seconds of patience. That’s the whole café — right there on your counter.
